An accidental ecological laboratory
When the Yadana gas pipeline was constructed between 1995 and 1998, it sliced through the Tanintharyi forest, one of the largest remaining areas of lowland evergreen forest in Southeast Asia. To build and maintain the pipeline, a 60-meter-wide and 60-kilometer-long strip of this dense forest was completely cleared. This cleared area, known as a right-of-way (ROW), created a linear break in a continuous, old-growth ecosystem. Ecologically, this act of deforestation triggered a large-scale, long-term experiment in forest regeneration and habitat fragmentation.
The process that begins on this cleared land is called secondary succession. The dark, humid forest floor was replaced by a sun-scorched, open environment. This allowed fast-growing, sun-loving pioneer species, including grasses, shrubs, and weedy plants—to colonize the bare soil. Over years, this new plant community matured into a distinct habitat, fundamentally different from the deep forest just meters away. This sharp transition zone is known as an "edge," and the ecological dynamics along it are a primary focus of study. The clearing effectively inserted a 60-kilometer-long strip of a completely different ecosystem into the middle of the original forest.
A barrier and a highway
The 60-meter clearing presents a different reality depending on an animal's size, mobility, and habitat preference. For many small, ground-dwelling species adapted to the forest understory, the gap is an impassable barrier. Small mammals, amphibians, and insects that rely on the dense canopy for cover from predators or to maintain moisture would find the hot and exposed clearing a dangerous obstacle. This can effectively split a single large population into two smaller, isolated ones, reducing genetic flow.
For other species, the pipeline clearing became a new resource or a convenient travel route. The low, shrubby vegetation that grew in the clearing provides food for grazing animals. Predators may use the linear path as a highway, allowing them to travel and hunt more efficiently than by moving through dense forest. Camera trap surveys in the broader Tanintharyi Nature Reserve have documented a range of predators, including leopards, large Indian civets, and yellow-throated martens, that could potentially exploit such a corridor. The pipeline's ecological story involves division and connection, where a single man-made line on a map has re-routed the lives of the forest's inhabitants.
