An Underground Evolutionary Laboratory
The Tremiti Islands, an archipelago 20 kilometers off the Italian Gargano Peninsula, are the emergent peaks of a submerged limestone platform. This geological foundation is riddled with a complex karst system of fractures and conduits, creating a subterranean world of caves and smaller voids. Many of these caves are now partially or fully submerged, a result of sea-level rise since the last glacial period. Within this dark, isolated habitat, a unique evolutionary process has unfolded.
The islands host troglobites, organisms fully adapted to a lightless, subterranean existence. These animals typically show a suite of adaptations known as troglomorphism: loss of eyes (anophthalmia), loss of pigmentation, and the development of elongated appendages to navigate and sense their environment without light. The prime examples in the Tremiti are several species of tiny, blind ground beetles of the genus Italodytes. These beetles are endemic, meaning they are found on these islands and absolutely nowhere else on Earth.
A Clock in the DNA
The story of the Italodytes beetles is one of geological and biological isolation. During Pleistocene ice ages, lower sea levels connected the Tremiti Islands to the mainland Gargano promontory. Ancestors of the beetles, which were not yet cave-adapted, colonized the underground fractures of the limestone massif. As the ice ages ended and sea levels rose, the land bridge disappeared, and the rising Adriatic Sea turned the highest points of the massif into an archipelago. This process, known as vicariance, trapped populations of the beetles within the now-separate underground systems of each island.
Molecular clock analysis—a technique that uses the mutation rate of DNA to estimate when species diverged, suggests this isolation occurred about two million years ago. Genetic studies of the different Italodytes species on the islands of San Domino and Capraia reveal a remarkable case of parallel evolution. After being separated by the sea, each island's beetle population independently evolved the same troglobitic traits. They lost their eyes and their color in separate, but parallel, evolutionary paths, driven by the identical pressures of their dark, cavernous environments. The result is an experiment in evolution, demonstrating how similar conditions can produce similar outcomes in completely isolated populations.
