The desert that eats signals
In the northern Mexican desert, spanning parts of Durango, Chihuahua, and Coahuila, is a 50-kilometer patch of land where technology sometimes behaves erratically. Known as the Zone of Silence (La Zona del Silencio), it exists within the 342,388-hectare Mapimí Biosphere Reserve. The area gained notoriety after an Athena V-123-D test rocket, launched from a U.S. base in Green River, Utah, on July 11, 1970, veered hundreds of miles off course and crashed here. The rocket carried two small containers of the radioactive element Cobalt-57, prompting a covert U.S. military recovery operation that required building a 16-kilometer rail spur to haul away tons of contaminated soil and debris.
The name "Zone of Silence" was coined in 1966 by an engineer from the Mexican oil company Pemex, Augusto Harry de la Peña, who experienced radio communication difficulties while exploring the region. The primary scientific hypothesis for these disruptions points to high subterranean concentrations of magnetite and uranium, which could generate electromagnetic pulses that interfere with radio signals. This high mineralization may also explain why compasses reportedly spin erratically when placed near certain rocks on the ground. Millions of years ago, this entire area was at the bottom of an ancient ocean called the Sea of Thetys, which left behind vast salt and mineral deposits.
A biological island in the desert
The Zone of Silence is a biologically significant area. The region is part of the Mapimí Biosphere Reserve, established in 1977, a few years after the rocket crash brought international attention to the area. This protected reserve is an important habitat within the Chihuahuan Desert, home to over 400 plant species, 200 species of birds, and dozens of mammals and reptiles.
Among the notable inhabitants is the endangered Bolson tortoise (Gopherus flavomarginatus), North America's largest land reptile. Other species include the Mexican fringe-toed lizard (Uma paraphygas), the puma (Puma concolor), the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and the kit fox (Vulpes macrotis). The reserve contains at least 39 species of cacti, several of which are endemic to the region. While local legends speak of strange mutations, scientists attribute the unique life here to natural adaptation to a harsh desert environment, not paranormal or radioactive influences. Scientific monitoring after the 1970 rocket crash found radiation levels were extremely low and limited to the impact site, with no measurable genetic impact on the surrounding ecosystems.
