A geological prize
The dry riverbed of Wadi Hammamat cuts through the Precambrian mountains of Egypt's Eastern Desert. This geological exposure reveals a sought-after material: a hard, dark green meta-graywacke sandstone the ancient Egyptians called bekhen-stone. Geologically, it is a type of sedimentary rock, specifically a feldspathic or arkosic graywacke, that has undergone low-grade metamorphism. This process produced minerals like chlorite and epidote, which give the stone its characteristic color. The rock is fine-grained and durable, capable of taking a fine polish, which made it ideal for high-status objects. For nearly 4,000 years, from the Predynastic period (c. 4000 BCE) through the Roman era, this wadi was the primary source for this material, used to create everything from the Narmer Palette to royal sarcophagi, statues, and vessels.
The expedition logbook
Over 600 hieroglyphic and hieratic inscriptions are carved into the wadi's rock faces, documenting the state-sponsored quarrying expeditions sent by numerous pharaohs. These texts are a detailed administrative and commemorative record. Inscriptions often name the ruling pharaoh, the expedition leader, the year of the mission, and the number of workers. One of the largest missions recorded was under Senusret I, whose Year 38 expedition involved approximately 18,660 men to quarry stone for 60 sphinxes and 150 statues. The records also detail the workforce, which included soldiers, skilled artisans, brewers, and bakers.
A massive undertaking during the reign of Ramesses IV in his third year (c. 1152 BC) involved 8,368 men, including 5,000 soldiers and 130 stonemasons. This expedition, led by the High Priest of Amun, Ramessesnakht, was sent to acquire stone for monuments in Thebes. The stela recording this event also notes that 900 men perished during the mission. The logistics of these operations were immense, with quarried blocks weighing 40 tons or more being dragged over 60 miles to the Nile. The inscriptions continued through the Roman period, with graffiti recording activities under emperors like Augustus, Nero, and Titus.
The oldest geological map
One of the most significant finds related to the wadi was not in the valley itself. The Turin Papyrus Map, discovered at Deir el-Medina, is the world's oldest surviving geological map. Created around 1150 BC by the scribe Amennakhte for Ramesses IV's expedition, it details a 15-kilometer stretch of the Wadi Hammamat. The map uses different colors and patterns to distinguish rock types, such as pink for gold-bearing quartz veins and dark brown for the bekhen-stone quarries. It accurately depicts geological features, fault lines, the locations of mines, and even topographic details like hills, making it a tool for resource extraction.
