A Prehistoric Giant
The Beluga sturgeon (Huso huso) is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, a species that has existed for over 200 million years. These anadromous fish live primarily in the salty Caspian Sea but migrate up freshwater rivers like the Volga to spawn. Historically, they reached enormous sizes; a female caught in the Volga estuary in 1827 weighed 1,571 kilograms (3,463 pounds) and measured over 7 meters (23 feet) long. They are also exceptionally long-lived, with a maximum recorded lifespan of 118 years.
This slow life cycle makes the species vulnerable. Females do not reach sexual maturity until they are 15 to 20 years old. The roe they produce is the famed Beluga caviar, the most expensive in the world, with market prices that can reach or exceed $10,000 per kilogram. The rarest variety, from albino sturgeon between 60 and 100 years old, is even more valuable. This high value drove intense fishing, which, combined with other pressures, has pushed the species to the brink of extinction. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Beluga sturgeon as critically endangered.
An Artery Blocked by Concrete
The Volga River has historically been the primary spawning ground for Caspian Beluga sturgeon. The construction of hydroelectric dams in the 20th century fundamentally altered this ancient migration. The Volgograd Dam, completed in 1961, was a particular catastrophe for the species. The dam is the first barrier for sturgeon migrating from the Caspian Sea and its construction blocked access to between 80% and 90% of their historical spawning grounds upstream. The number of Beluga sturgeon annually entering the Volga to spawn dropped from an average of 26,000 in the early 1960s to just 2,800 by the early 2000s.
The combination of damming and rampant overfishing, including illegal poaching, caused wild sturgeon populations in the Volga to plummet by 90% since 1970. In response, Russia banned commercial sturgeon fishing in the Caspian basin in the early 2000s. Conservation now depends on aquaculture and restocking programs. The Astrakhan region is the center for these efforts, with several federal hatcheries dedicated to breeding sturgeon and releasing millions of juvenile fish into the Volga. Institutions like the Caspian Fisheries Research Institute (CaspNIRKh) in Astrakhan lead research on restoring these ancient fish.
