Desert Climate Control
The Roman city of Trimithis, now called Amheida, sits in Egypt's Dakhla Oasis, a remote location that made the engineering of its public bathhouse a feat. The facility relied on a heating method known as a hypocaust system to warm its rooms and pools. This technology, developed by the Romans around the first century BCE, was central heating that circulated hot air under the floors and through the walls.
The process began at an external furnace, or praefurnium, where a fire, fueled by local acacia wood, generated immense heat. This hot air and smoke was then channeled into a crawl space beneath the main rooms. The floor, called a suspensura, was raised on small brick pillars known as pilae. The floor itself was a structure, typically made of a layer of tiles, a layer of concrete, and a final surface of tiles or mosaics, all materials withstanding and retaining heat. As the hot air flowed through the underfloor space, it heated the mass of the floor above, which then radiated warmth into the room. To heat the walls, hollow, rectangular flue tiles called tubuli were embedded in the structure, allowing the hot air to rise through them before exiting through vents in the roof. This design turned the entire room into a large, slow-release radiator. The system could achieve room temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38°C).
Oasis Hydrology and Engineering
Maintaining a bathhouse required a substantial and reliable water supply, a challenge in the desert. The engineers at Trimithis likely tapped into the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, an underground water source that feeds the oases of the Western Desert. Artesian wells, which bring groundwater to the surface without pumping, would have provided the necessary volume of water. The Romans had techniques for water management, and the water would have been channeled into the bath complex to supply the various pools.
The bath followed a thermal sequence. Bathers would progress through a cold room (frigidarium), a warm room (tepidarium), and a hot room (caldarium). The rooms located closest to the furnace, like the caldarium, received the most heat. Water for the hot pools was heated in boilers placed directly over the furnace before being piped into the baths. The construction used fired bricks and waterproof mortar, likely hydraulic concrete containing volcanic ash (pozzolana) or crushed brick powder, to ensure the pools and channels were watertight. Archaeological work shows the bathhouse was renovated in the mid-fourth century CE, shortly before the city was abandoned for reasons that are still under investigation.
