A cave that breathes poison
Deep in the jungles of Tabasco, Mexico, near the town of Tapijulapa, lies Cueva de Villa Luz, also known as Cueva del Azufre ("Cave of Sulfur"). This is not a static limestone cavern. It is an active and dangerous environment. The cave, stretching over two kilometers, is filled with thermal sulfur springs that release high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), a gas lethal to most forms of life. The air is thick with the smell of rotten eggs, and oxygen levels can be dangerously low.
The cave walls are alive. They drip with slimy, mucous-like formations that hang from the ceiling like small stalactites. These are not mineral deposits but living colonies of extremophilic bacteria known as "snotalites." These microbes perform chemosynthesis, deriving their energy not from sunlight but from oxidizing the hydrogen sulfide gas. Their metabolic waste product is sulfuric acid, making the drippings as corrosive as battery acid, with a pH that can approach zero. This intensely acidic environment actively dissolves the limestone, making the bacteria themselves a primary force in the cave's expansion.
The ritual of the sardine
This toxic underworld is the location for a centuries-old ceremony of the indigenous Zoque people. Each year on the Sunday of Holy Week, they perform "La Pesca de la Sardina" (The Fishing of the Sardine). The ritual begins with prayers and music from drums and flutes, as a Zoque elder asks the spirits of the cave for permission to enter and for a bountiful year.
Inside the pitch-black, gas-filled passages, the participants do not use nets or hooks. Instead, they carry a paste made from the ground root of the barbasco plant (Paullinia mexicana or Lonchocarpus sp.). This root contains rotenone, a natural toxin that inhibits cellular respiration. The Zoque wade into the milky, sulfurous streams and release the barbasco paste into the water.
The target of this ritual is a specific species of fish, the Atlantic molly (Poecilia mexicana), which lives within the cave. These fish have evolved remarkable adaptations to survive the high H₂S levels, including genetic changes to their respiratory enzymes and larger gills. The barbasco poison stuns the mollies, causing them to float to the surface where they can be easily scooped up in baskets. The fish are considered a gift from the underworld gods, and the harvest provides food until their crops are ready.
