An Accidental Discovery
Between 1948 and 1990, a series of remarkable discoveries occurred in a field at Ken Hill, near Snettisham, Norfolk. It began when a farm worker named Raymond Williamson hit a large metal object while ploughing. Initially dismissing it as part of a brass bedstead, he set it aside. Experts later identified this and subsequent finds as Iron Age torcs, which are large, rigid neck rings. Over several decades, at least 14 separate hoards were unearthed in what became known as the "gold field". These nested pits contained nearly 180 torcs—some complete, others in fragments—along with raw metal ingots and coins. The entire collection represents the largest deposit of Iron Age precious metalwork found in northwestern Europe. French coins found within the hoards helped date the burials to approximately 75–60 BC. The finds are now primarily housed in the British Museum and Norwich Castle Museum.
Masterful Metallurgy
The most famous artifact is the Snettisham Great Torc, discovered in 1950. It weighs over a kilogram (1,084 grams) and has a diameter of about 20 centimeters. The neck ring's construction shows sophisticated metalworking techniques. It is formed from 64 separate metal threads, each about 1.9 mm wide. These threads were first twisted in groups of eight to create eight thicker ropes. These eight ropes were then twisted together to form the final, substantial neckpiece.
Scientific analysis of the torcs shows a deliberate use of alloys. The Great Torc is made of an alloy of gold and silver, known as electrum. Other torcs in the hoard use specific mixtures of gold, silver, and copper. Researchers have found that Iron Age metalsmiths manipulated the composition of the alloys to alter their surface color. They used techniques to enrich the surface with gold or silver, leaving a copper-rich core. This level of control over the material's properties shows a detailed understanding of metallurgy, allowing them to create objects of specific weight, color, and workability. The hollow, cast terminals of the Great Torc were created separately using molds and then welded onto the twisted ropes.
