A curious discovery in a tomb
In 1898, archaeologists excavating the tomb of Pa-di-Imen in the Saqqara necropolis discovered a small artifact made of sycamore wood. Dated to approximately 200 BCE, during the Ptolemaic Period, the object measures 14 centimeters in length with a wingspan of 18 centimeters and weighs just 39.12 grams. Initially cataloged as a simple wooden bird figurine, it was placed in storage at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
The object remained in relative obscurity until 1969, when Dr. Khalil Messiha, a professor and member of the Egyptian Aeronautical Club, examined it. He observed that several of its features were unlike other Egyptian bird carvings. The object lacks legs and detailed feather carvings. Most importantly, its wings possess a distinct airfoil shape, thicker at the front and tapering toward the back, and are set at a slight dihedral angle—both are important features for aerodynamic lift and stability in modern aircraft. Its tail is shaped like a vertical stabilizer, a feature absent in actual birds but essential for an airplane's directional stability.
The debate over ancient flight
Dr. Messiha proposed a provocative theory: the Saqqara Bird was not a toy or a ritual object, but a scale model of a functional glider. This idea suggests that ancient Egyptians possessed a sophisticated understanding of aerodynamics long before the Wright brothers. Proponents of this theory believe an important piece, a horizontal tailplane, may have been lost over time.
Subsequent analysis and experimentation have yielded conflicting results. One aerodynamics expert, Simon Sanderson, built a replica and tested it in a wind tunnel. His results showed the model without a tailplane could generate four times its own weight in lift. When a tailplane was added and the data was entered into a flight simulator, the virtual model flew successfully.
Other researchers remain skeptical. A replica built by glider designer Martin Gregorie performed poorly, proving unstable and incapable of flight without a tailplane. A 2023 computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation based on a 3D scan of the artifact concluded it was aerodynamically unstable. The study found the bird's center of gravity is too far back, and it would roll uncontrollably, making sustained flight impossible. Alternative explanations suggest the artifact could be a high-status child's toy, a boomerang-like throwing stick, or a weathervane for a sacred boat. The artifact is currently housed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, its true purpose is a topic of debate.
