A Revolution in Miniaturization
In the caves and rock shelters of South Africa's Eastern Cape, archaeologists have uncovered evidence of a technological leap that occurred tens of thousands of years ago. Middle Stone Age humans developed the ability to create small, standardized stone blades, known as microliths. These were not handheld tools; instead, they were components of more complex, composite weapons and implements. Some of the earliest examples of this technology, part of a tradition called the Howiesons Poort, date back to around 65,000 years ago. These blades, often just a few centimeters long, were meticulously shaped from materials like silcrete, which was sometimes heat-treated to make it easier to flake.
The main innovation was modularity. By producing interchangeable parts, early humans could create versatile and easily repairable tools. A hunter could carry a supply of these tiny blades. If a point on a spear shattered on impact, it could be replaced with a new microlith without needing to craft an entirely new weapon. This required sophisticated knapping skills but also the development of effective adhesives. Residue analysis on artifacts from sites like Border Cave and Sibudu Cave reveals the use of complex glues. These were often compound adhesives, made by mixing plant-based resin—sometimes from Podocarpus (Yellowwood) trees—with materials like ochre. The creation of this tar-like substance through distillation is a significant step in early chemical engineering and abstract thought.
The Howiesons Poort Technocomplex
The period named Howiesons Poort, which started around 64,800 years ago and ended around 59,500 years ago, is distinct in the archaeological record for this microlithic technology. Assemblages from this era, found at sites like Klasies River and the original Howieson's Poort Shelter near Grahamstown, are characterized by backed tools like trapezoids and crescent-shaped segments. The "backing" involved intentionally blunting one edge of the blade, likely to facilitate hafting it onto a wooden or bone shaft.
These composite tools were highly adaptable. The small blades could be arranged in a line to form a long cutting edge on a knife or hafted individually onto arrows or darts. This technology was so effective that it persisted for thousands of years. The ability to conceive of and manufacture multi-part tools demonstrates advanced cognitive abilities, including planning and multitasking. The production process, selecting and treating the right stone to manufacturing the adhesive and assembling the final tool, involved a complex chain of operations that shows the ingenuity of these early modern humans.
