A prehistoric pigment factory
On the coastal cliffs near Mossel Bay, a series of caves at a site called Pinnacle Point hold some of the earliest evidence for the complex minds of modern Homo sapiens. Excavations in one cave, designated PP13B, uncovered a collection of 57 ochre pieces from layers of sediment dated to approximately 164,000 years ago. The dating was established using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), a technique that determines the last time grains of sand were exposed to sunlight.
This was not a random collection of rocks. Analysis showed that these early humans were deliberately altering the ochre using fire. Ochre is a natural clay earth pigment containing iron oxides. The local, raw form is primarily goethite, which has a yellowish-brown color. The research team at Pinnacle Point, led by paleoanthropologist Curtis Marean, discovered that many of the ochre pieces had been carefully heated. Through experimental archaeology, they determined that heating the goethite-rich rock to temperatures between 300 and 350 degrees Celsius in a controlled hearth transforms it. This process of calcination dehydrates the goethite (FeO(OH)), converting it into the mineral hematite (Fe₂O₃), which produces a deep, bright red color. This is the earliest known example of humans using sophisticated pyrotechnology to transform a raw material for a specific, planned outcome.
Cognitive leaps in the Middle Stone Age
The heat treatment of ochre at Pinnacle Point is a recipe. It reveals a level of cognitive ability and technological planning previously thought to have emerged much later. The process required multiple, deliberate steps: selecting the right raw materials, preparing a controlled fire, and burying the ochre in sand beneath the embers to ensure slow, even heating that prevented the rock from fracturing. This sequence shows foresight and abstract thought working knowledge of material science. These Middle Stone Age people could visualize a material that did not yet exist—bright red pigment—and execute a complex plan to create it.
This evidence for advanced cognition is supported by other discoveries at the Pinnacle Point cave complex. The same 164,000-year-old layers contain the earliest evidence for the systematic harvesting of marine resources, like shellfish, indicating a complex understanding of tides and seasons. Archaeologists also found microliths—small, precisely made stone bladelets—which were components of more complex projectile weapons. Prior to the discoveries at Pinnacle Point, this type of advanced behavior and technology were mostly associated with humans from around 40,000 years ago in Europe. The findings here push back the timeline for modern human behavior significantly, suggesting the Homo sapiens living on this coast had cognitive abilities identical to our own.
