An Unconventional Life at Sea
The Okhotsk Atka Mackerel, Pleurogrammus azonus, is a fish with a misleading name and a complex life history tied to the cold, productive waters of the Northwest Pacific. Despite its common name, it is not a mackerel of the Scombridae family, but a species of greenling from the family Hexagrammidae. Its range extends from the Sea of Japan and the Kuril Islands to the Sea of Okhotsk, which hosts its primary population. Juvenile fish school in large numbers near the surface, but as they mature, they transition to a benthic, or bottom-dwelling, existence at depths down to 240 meters.
This species undertakes a significant migration important for its reproduction. Spawning occurs from September to February. The fish move from deeper offshore waters to shallow coastal areas. Females deposit sticky egg masses in crevices or gravel on rocky seabeds at depths of less than 20 meters. In a display of paternal care, the male then guards the nest, fanning the eggs to keep them oxygenated for 50 to 60 days until they hatch. This shallow-water spawning makes them vulnerable, but it is an phase in a life cycle that powers a major commercial fishery.
A Fishery Born from Discovery
Soviet fishing fleets began expanding their efforts across the Pacific after World War II. By the 1970s, they were actively exploring the Sea of Okhotsk, a region that provides about 65-70% of Russia's total catch in the far east. It was during this period that large-scale industrial fishing for the Okhotsk Atka Mackerel began after the discovery of enormous schools. The fishery quickly became a significant enterprise, harvesting approximately 100,000 tons annually throughout the late 20th century.
The fish itself can grow up to 62 cm in length and live for 12 years. It is an important part of the marine food web, feeding on zooplankton like copepods and euphausiids. In turn, it is prey for larger fish such as Pacific cod and halibut, as well as Steller sea lions. The management of the fishery is complex, requiring careful consideration of the mackerel's role as a food source for other species. This has led to regulations that disperse fishing efforts to avoid depleting local populations in sensitive ecological areas. The fishery remains highly commercial and is an important economic component for the region.
