The communal winter bunker
In the arid interior valleys of British Columbia, the Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus oreganus) survives the freezing winters through a remarkable strategy: communal denning. These snakes, a subspecies of the Western Rattlesnake, gather in large numbers in underground dens called hibernacula. These are not random shelters; they are specific geological formations, typically rock fissures or deep talus slopes on south-facing hillsides that provide stable temperatures above freezing. A single den can house dozens or even hundreds of individuals. All known dens in the Canadian population, estimated at over 17,000 snakes, are spread across 368 known sites.
The snakes exhibit extreme fidelity to these sites, with some dens believed to have been in continuous use since the last glacial period. This long-term use is possible because the dens offer a important refuge that is limited in the area. Inside the hibernaculum, the snakes enter a state of brumation, a hibernation-like state for cold-blooded animals where their metabolism slows dramatically. They do not eat during this period, which can last from October to April. The south-facing aspect of the dens is also important for the spring emergence, as it provides warmer surfaces for basking, allowing the snakes to raise their body temperature before dispersing for the summer. These sites are so essential that provincial guidelines recommend a 1-kilometer buffer zone around known dens to protect them from disturbance.
An ancient and mysterious commute
Each spring, typically between March and April, the rattlesnakes emerge from their ancient dens and begin a migration to summer foraging grounds. This migration can cover surprising distances, with individuals traveling as far as 4 kilometers from their winter shelter. Males often travel farther than females. They spend the summer hunting small mammals like voles, mice, and ground squirrels. As autumn approaches, a process begins. The snakes navigate back to the exact same hibernaculum, a feat of orientation that is not fully understood.
Scientists suspect they use a combination of sensory cues. Juvenile snakes may follow pheromone trails left by adults to locate a den for the first time. Other potential mechanisms include using the sun for orientation or sensing the Earth's magnetic field. The specific structural and thermal properties of the den site itself may also provide recognizable cues from a distance. This annual pilgrimage is fraught with peril. The primary threats to these snakes are linked to their migration, including mortality on roads that intersect their travel corridors and habitat fragmentation from agriculture and urban development. Due to these pressures, the Western Rattlesnake is listed as a threatened species in Canada. Conservation efforts, including research programs and the construction of ecopassages, are underway to mitigate these risks.
