The World's Densest Leopard Population
In the northern suburbs of Mumbai, a city of over 20 million people, lies Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), a protected area of approximately 104 square kilometers. This park is not on the outskirts of the metropolis; it is surrounded by it. Inside this unique urban wilderness, a surprisingly large population of Indian leopards (Panthera pardus fusca) thrives. A 2024 census identified 54 individual leopards living in and around SGNP. This concentration of big cats results in one of the highest leopard densities ever recorded globally, with some studies estimating it as high as 26 leopards per 100 square kilometers.
The leopards' survival depends on their remarkable adaptability, particularly in their diet. While they hunt wild prey within the park—such as chital deer, sambar deer, and wild pigs—a significant portion of their food comes from the urban environment. Scat analysis has shown that domestic dogs make up a major part of their diet, with some studies indicating they constitute up to 40% of the leopards' food intake. This reliance on stray dogs, which are drawn to garbage dumps on the city's edge, is a factor in how so many large predators can subsist in such a small and fragmented habitat. The leopards are primarily nocturnal, using the cover of darkness to navigate the dense human settlements that border the park.

The proximity between leopards and humans in Mumbai is an intense and ongoing experiment in urban conservation. The relationship is complex, with periods of both conflict and coexistence. Human-leopard conflict peaked in the early 2000s, but attacks have since decreased significantly due to concerted efforts from the Forest Department and local communities. GPS-collar tracking studies on several leopards have revealed that the animals are adept at avoiding humans, often moving through densely populated areas at night with minimal interaction.
Community-led initiatives, such as "Mumbaikars for SGNP," help mitigate conflict. These programs educate residents living near the park about leopard behavior and promote simple safety measures. These include proper waste management to reduce the stray dog population, ensuring children are not outdoors alone after dark, and walking in groups. This approach has helped promote a greater understanding of the leopards, changing the focus from fear to one of shared space. The persistence of three female leopards, first photographed in 2015 and re-captured by camera traps in 2024, demonstrates their long-term survival in this challenging, human-dominated area.
