The Sound in the Silence
In the high desert of Taos, New Mexico, a small portion of the population perceives a sound that is absent to everyone else. First widely reported in the early 1990s, the Taos Hum is a persistent, low-frequency noise described as a rumbling, whirring, or buzzing, often compared to the sound of a distant diesel engine. Only about 2% of the local population reports hearing it. For this small group, the effects can be severe, including headaches, nausea, dizziness, sleep disturbances, and intense anxiety.
The acoustic properties of the Hum are as elusive as its source. Those who hear it—often called "hearers"—report individual frequencies ranging between 32 and 80 Hertz. This is at the lowest end of the human auditory spectrum. Some hearers also perceive a slow modulation, a pulsing beat between 0.5 and 2 Hz. Strangely, the sound is often more noticeable indoors and at night, when ambient noise levels are at their lowest. Attempts to record the phenomenon with standard microphones have consistently failed, suggesting the sound is either not a conventional acoustic wave or is too faint to be distinguished from background noise.
An Investigation with No Answers
Public pressure from distressed residents prompted a formal investigation in 1993, organized after a petition to the U.S. Congress. The study was a collaborative effort involving researchers from the University of New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories. The team deployed an array of sensitive equipment to measure acoustic, seismic, and electromagnetic signals throughout the Taos area. Investigators even developed a special oversized microphone from an 18-inch woofer specifically to detect very low-frequency sounds.
Despite these efforts, the investigation was inconclusive. No external acoustic source was ever identified. The team found no unusual seismic activity or electromagnetic fields, apart from expected signals from local power lines. Theories about industrial equipment were largely dismissed, as the Hum persisted even when nearby plants were inactive.
The lack of an external source has led to several alternative hypotheses. One prominent theory is that the Hum is a physiological phenomenon, such as a rare form of tinnitus or spontaneous otoacoustic emissions—sounds generated within the inner ear itself that are perceived as external noise. Another idea points to the unique geology of the region or atmospheric conditions creating acoustic resonance. The proximity to secretive government labs also fuels speculation about military experiments, though no evidence supports this. After decades, the Taos Hum is an unsolved acoustic mystery.
