The special forces operation
In 2002, during Operation Enduring Freedom, a U.S. Army patrol went missing in a remote, mountainous region of Kandahar Province. A special operations unit was dispatched to investigate. According to accounts that surfaced years later, the team discovered the missing patrol's gear scattered near the entrance to a large cave, along with human remains.
As the story goes, a humanoid figure between 12 and 15 feet tall emerged from the cave. It was described as having flaming red hair, six fingers on each hand, and a double row of teeth. The creature, wielding a large pike or spear, allegedly impaled a soldier identified only as "Dan," killing him instantly. The remaining soldiers opened fire with M4 carbines, recon carbines, and a Barrett .50-caliber rifle. It took approximately 30 seconds of sustained fire to kill the creature. Afterward, the massive body was reportedly airlifted by a Chinook helicopter, transported to a secret base, and never seen again. The soldiers involved were allegedly required to sign non-disclosure agreements, silencing the event.
Biological and official realities
From a biological standpoint, a 12-foot-tall bipedal humanoid is highly improbable. The square-cube law dictates that as a shape grows in size, its volume (and thus mass) increases faster than its surface area. A 12-foot human, if simply scaled up, would weigh roughly eight times more than a 6-foot person, placing immense stress on bones and circulatory systems. The tallest man in recorded history, Robert Wadlow, stood 8 feet 11.1 inches tall due to a pituitary gland disorder that produced excess human growth hormone. He suffered from numerous health problems and required leg braces to walk, showing the physical limits of the human form.
The U.S. Department of Defense has no record of this event. In 2016, a DoD spokesperson stated, "We do not have any record or information about a special forces member killed by a giant in Kandahar." Fact-checking organizations like Snopes have classified the story as a modern military legend or internet hoax. The narrative first gained significant public attention in the mid-2000s on the radio show "Coast to Coast AM" and was later popularized by author L.A. Marzulli in his documentary series. The story's details, such as the six fingers and double rows of teeth, are like descriptions of the Nephilim, a race of giants from biblical lore, showing its origins are in folklore rather than fact.
