An archaeological site of industry
The Iron Bridge crosses the River Severn in Shropshire, a county whose geology made it a center of the Industrial Revolution. At the end of the last Ice Age, glacial meltwaters carved the Ironbridge Gorge, exposing valuable deposits of coal, iron ore, limestone, and fireclay. These resources fueled the area's industrial growth. The region is the birthplace of modern industry and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. This designation helps preserve the area's industrial archaeology, which includes the bridge and preserved factories, furnaces, workers' housing, and transport infrastructure like canals and tramways.
Construction of the bridge starts with the Darby family dynasty of ironmasters. In 1709, Abraham Darby I pioneered a new method for smelting iron at nearby Coalbrookdale. He used coke, a coal-based fuel, instead of charcoal. This innovation made the mass production of cast iron economically feasible and accelerated the iron trade. Decades later, as local industry boomed, the need for a sturdy bridge across the busy River Severn became apparent. In 1773, Shrewsbury architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard proposed a radical idea: a bridge made entirely of cast iron. After Pritchard's death in 1777, Abraham Darby III, the grandson of the innovator, completed the project completion.
A monument of joinery and iron
Construction on the Iron Bridge began in 1777 and the main structure was erected in the summer of 1779. The bridge officially opened to traffic on New Year's Day, 1781. It has a span of 100 feet 6 inches (30.6 meters) and is constructed from five main semicircular ribs. In total, 378 tons of iron were used to build it. The structure contains almost 1,700 individual components.
The construction methods were adapted from woodworking. A foreman at the Coalbrookdale foundry, Thomas Gregory, created detailed designs that used carpentry joints like mortise and tenons and dovetails to connect the iron pieces. The components were not standardized; each was individually cast to fit with its neighbors, with some "identical" parts varying by several centimeters. The two outer ribs bear the inscription: "This bridge was cast at Coalbrook-Dale and erected in the year MDCCLXXIX". The bridge's strength was proven in 1795 when it withstood severe flooding that destroyed other bridges along the Severn. Industrial archaeology at the site is ongoing, with surveys and digs uncovering evidence of the area's manufacturing past, including the furnace where the iron was smelted and even earlier steel works from the 1600s.
