An Icy Sculptor
The landscape of Cradle Mountain is a direct product of massive glaciation. During the Pleistocene epoch, which ended roughly 11,700 years ago, Tasmania experienced several ice ages. At the peak of the last glaciation, a significant ice cap covered the Central Plateau, feeding glaciers that flowed outwards, carving the terrain. The mountains in this area, including the 1,545-meter Cradle Mountain, are capped with hard, Jurassic-era dolerite. This igneous rock, intruded into older sedimentary layers around 175 million years ago, is exceptionally resistant to erosion. As glaciers scraped across the landscape, they plucked away softer surrounding rock, leaving the durable dolerite peaks as jagged peaks.
This process created classic glacial landforms. The valleys, like that holding the Dove River, were deepened and widened into a characteristic U-shape. At the heads of these valleys, armchair-shaped hollows called cirques were gouged out by the ice. Today, these cirques hold many of the region's famous lakes, such as Dove Lake, Crater Lake, and Lake Wilks. These lakes are technically known as tarns—bodies of water that collect in a glacially-carved basin, often dammed by a ridge of debris, or moraine, left by the glacier as it retreated. Studies of moraine deposits and exposure-age dating suggest that the final phases of major ice activity in this area occurred between 17,000 and 20,000 years ago.
A Landscape Left Behind
When the glaciers finally melted, they left behind a dramatically altered environment. The scoured dolerite cliffs and deep, water-filled basins became the foundation for a unique alpine ecosystem. This is a landscape of Gondwanan relics—ancient plant species whose ancestors existed when Australia was part of the supercontinent Gondwana. The cool, wet conditions of the post-glacial environment provided a refuge for species that have disappeared from much of mainland Australia.
Among the most notable of these is the Deciduous Beech, Nothofagus gunnii, Australia’s only native cold-climate winter-deciduous tree. It is endemic to the highlands of Tasmania and grows in tangled thickets, earning it the nickname "tanglefoot." Its closest relatives are found in New Zealand and South America, evidence of continental drift. Ancient endemic conifers also thrive here, including the Pencil Pine (Athrotaxis cupressoides) and King Billy Pine (Athrotaxis selaginoides), some of which are over a thousand years old. These trees often grow in fire-protected areas around the edges of the glacial lakes and tarns. The park's vegetation is varied, with alpine moorlands and temperate rainforests existing in close proximity, a direct result of the varied topography sculpted by the ice. About 40-55% of the alpine flora in the park is endemic to Tasmania, making it a globally significant center of biodiversity.
