A site of engineered immortality
In the Charaideo district of Assam, near the Patkai Range, stand more than 150 grass-covered burial mounds called moidams. These are the tombs of the Ahom kings and queens who ruled for 600 years, from the 13th to the 19th century. Charaideo was the first capital of the Ahom dynasty, founded by Chao Lung Sukaphaa in 1253 CE, and it remained the kingdom's sacred necropolis. The site contains 90 royal burials and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2024, recognized as India's 43rd such site.
A moidam's structure is a multi-part system. At its heart is a vaulted chamber (the Tak), built of stone and burnt brick, which houses the remains. This chamber is covered by a large, hemispherical earthen mound (Ga-Moidam), which can be up to 20 meters high. An octagonal dwarf wall (Garh) encloses the entire structure, defining the sacred perimeter. The design is a physical representation of the Tai-Ahom universe. Early moidams used wood for the vaults, but from the late 17th century, under kings like Rudra Singha, stone and brick became standard.
Medieval material science
The most remarkable scientific aspect of the moidams is their longevity in a hostile climate. The region receives an average annual rainfall of about 2500 mm, with most of it concentrated in the intense summer monsoon. Despite this, excavated vaults show little water damage or structural decay. The Ahom engineers developed a unique organic-based cement called karal. This mortar was a complex mixture of locally sourced materials, including shell lime, molasses, black gram, hemp, and tree resin. The exact formula and preparation techniques remain partially unknown, but its adhesive and hydrophobic properties are evident in the well-preserved masonry.
The construction detailed in Ahom canonical texts, like the Changrung Phukan, involved waterproof mortar and other techniques. The earthen mound itself is a geotechnical accomplishment, designed for stability and water shedding. Excavations of Moidam No. 2 revealed that the earthen mound was covered with three courses of bricks laid over a layer of stone pebbles, creating a durable outer shell. The internal vaults, often double-storied, were constructed with thick, one-meter walls and arched doorways, showing an understanding of load-bearing architecture. This combination of a sealed inner chamber and a massive, layered earthen superstructure has protected the royal remains for centuries from both monsoon rains and seismic activity.
