The ghost of the forest
In the temperate broadleaf and mixed forests of Russia's Far East, a solitary predator stalks its territory. This is the Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis), a subspecies so rare that for decades its population hovered at a few dozen individuals. Recent estimates now count approximately 130 in Russia, a significant increase but still a dangerously low number. The leopards inhabit a thin sliver of land in Primorsky Krai, where Russia, China, and North Korea converge.
The primary threats to their existence are human-driven. Poaching, both for their distinctively spotted fur and for their bones used in some traditional Asian medicines, has historically decimated their numbers. Habitat loss from logging, farming, and forest fires further squeezed them into an ever-smaller range. This small, isolated population also faces the risk of inbreeding and low genetic diversity, which can lead to health defects and reduced resilience to diseases like canine distemper virus. Competition with the larger Amur tiger for prey can also lead to conflicts.
Conservation work has been intensive. In 2012, the Russian government established the Land of the Leopard National Park, a protected area of nearly 2,800 square kilometers (1,081 sq mi) that covers about 60% of the leopard's remaining habitat and all of its known breeding areas. This park, combined with anti-poaching patrols and efforts to maintain prey populations, is important for the leopard's fragile recovery.
An apex predator built for winter
The Amur leopard is uniquely adapted to its harsh environment. Its fur is paler and grows much longer and thicker in winter—up to 7 centimeters—to keep out the cold and deep snow. It has long limbs and wide paws, which help it walk through snow. Males typically weigh between 32 and 48 kilograms (70-106 lbs), while the smaller females weigh 25 to 43 kilograms (55-95 lbs).
They are solitary, nocturnal hunters that use stealth. Their diet consists mainly of roe deer, sika deer, and wild boar, but they will also hunt badgers, hares, and other small animals. An Amur leopard can reach speeds up to 60 kilometers per hour (37 mph) in short bursts and can leap powerfully, capable of jumping nearly 6 meters (19 feet) horizontally and 3 meters (10 feet) vertically. They often drag their kills up into trees to keep them safe from other predators and scavengers.
Scientists track the population using a network of over 200 camera traps. Because each leopard’s rosette pattern is unique, researchers can identify and monitor individuals, gathering precise data on their numbers, movements, and health without direct contact. These photographic records show that the leopards frequently move across the border between Russia and China, requiring international cooperation for their protection.
