The Orangutan's Toolkit
In the peat-swamp forests of Tanjung Puting National Park, Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii) exhibit remarkable technical skills. While tool use by wild Bornean orangutans is rarer than in their Sumatran cousins, observations here and at other sites reveal a repertoire of object manipulation. Orangutans modify sticks and branches to solve problems, most notably for foraging. They use sticks to probe tree holes for insects or to extract honey from bee nests.
The tool-making process is deliberate. An orangutan will select a branch, strip it of leaves, and sometimes modify the tip to make it more effective. Beyond foraging, they use leafy branches to swat insects or as umbrellas against the rain. Leaves are also fashioned into "gloves" for handling spiny or thorny fruits and branches. This behavior is not instinctual; it points to a capacity for planning and understanding cause and effect. Long-term studies, some dating back to the work of Dr. Biruté Galdikas at Camp Leakey within the park, have been foundational to understanding this complex behavior.
A Culture of Knowledge
One aspect of orangutan tool use is its variation between different populations, which scientists interpret as a form of animal culture. A technique common in one group may be absent in another located just across a river. These distinct behavioral patterns are not tied to genetic differences or environmental necessity alone. They are socially learned and passed from one generation to the next.
Young orangutans spend many years with their mothers, providing an extended period for observation and learning. Researchers have documented immature orangutans deliberately watching their mothers build nests, a complex, multi-stage process for survival, and then practicing the skill themselves. This social transmission of knowledge allows for unique traditions to emerge within specific communities. The specific way a stick is modified to extract seeds, or how leaves are used to amplify a "kiss-squeak" vocalization, can be a local tradition. This capacity for social learning suggests that the cognitive foundations for culture may have existed in the common ancestor of great apes and humans as far back as 14 million years ago.
