An Accidental Sanctuary
Northwest of Almaty, Kazakhstan, lies one of the largest man-made bodies of water of its kind: the Sorbulak reservoir system. Created in 1973, this vast network of lakes and channels was engineered to collect, treat, and store municipal and industrial wastewater from the growing metropolis of Almaty. The main reservoir covers a surface area of approximately 58 square kilometers, with a maximum depth of around 22 meters.
Water from Almaty undergoes mechanical and biological treatment before it is sent through a 49-kilometer-long canal to the Sorbulak system. Here, it enters a series of ponds and the main lake for a long-term natural purification process. This functional, engineered area has produced an unexpected outcome. The nutrient-rich waters have promoted a productive aquatic ecosystem, transforming the semi-desert steppe into a thriving wetland that is now one of Kazakhstan's most significant sites for bird diversity. The system has become an important stopover and breeding ground for hundreds of bird species.
A Wastewater-Fueled Food Web
The Sorbulak wetlands are a documented habitat for water birds, attracting an immense number and variety of species, especially during spring and autumn migrations. The site regularly hosts large colonies of Dalmatian Pelicans (Pelecanus crispus) and Great White Pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus). It is an important habitat for the globally endangered White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala). Other species include the Great Cormorant, Caspian Gull, Black-necked Grebe, and numerous waders and raptors like the Steppe Eagle.
Scientific analysis confirms the direct link between the wastewater and the bird populations. A study using stable isotope analysis—a technique that traces the flow of nutrients through a food web by examining the isotopic signatures in animal tissues—revealed that biomass originating from the treated sewage constitutes a substantial portion of the birds' diet. The analysis shows that, on average, 40% of the nutrients assimilated by the birds comes directly from organisms, such as chironomid larvae (non-biting midges), that feed on the treated effluent. This artificial ecosystem, fueled by urban wastewater, directly supports an important node on the Central Asian Flyway, a major migration route for birds traveling between Siberia and the Indian subcontinent.
