A Tectonic Paradox
The Sicily Channel is a zone of geological contradiction. Here, the African and Eurasian tectonic plates push against each other, converging at a rate of about 5 millimeters per year. Logic suggests this compression should squeeze the landscape, but instead, the seafloor is actively pulling apart. This process, known as continental rifting, began in the Early Pliocene and has created three major underwater depressions, or grabens: the Pantelleria, Linosa, and Malta grabens. These steep-walled troughs run northwest to southeast, reaching depths of up to 1,731 meters in the Malta graben.
This paradox occurs because is in the complex fragmentation of the crust. The Pelagian Block, a piece of the African continental margin that includes Sicily, does not move as a single, solid unit. Instead, it is breaking and rotating. As the larger African plate drives northward, the Sicilian portion rotates clockwise. This rotation accommodates the overall collision while simultaneously creating localized extension, pulling the crust apart to form the rift valley system. This stretching has thinned the continental crust significantly. While the normal crustal thickness in the region is 25 to 35 kilometers, beneath the Pantelleria graben it has been reduced to as little as 17 kilometers.
Volcanic Consequences
The thinning and fracturing of the Earth's crust provide pathways for magma to ascend from the mantle. This has resulted in widespread volcanic activity throughout the Sicily Channel since the Pliocene. The main examples are the volcanic islands of Pantelleria and Linosa. The magma chemistry here matches continental rift zones, not of the subduction zone volcanism seen further north in Italy.
Much of the volcanic activity is submarine. The Graham and Nameless Banks are two major submarine volcanic fields. The most famous feature is a seamount on the Graham Bank known as Ferdinandea. In July 1831, following intense seismic activity, this submarine volcano erupted and breached the surface, forming a new island. At its peak, the island reached a height of 63 meters and a circumference of nearly 5 kilometers. Composed of loose tephra, it was quickly eroded by waves and disappeared beneath the surface by January 1832. The most recent confirmed eruption in the region occurred in 1891, about 5 kilometers northwest of Pantelleria.
