An engineered mystery
The Oak Island mystery began in 1795 when a teenager named Daniel McGinnis found a circular depression on the island's eastern end. With two friends, he began to dig. Just a few feet down, they hit a layer of flagstones. At a depth of 10 feet (3 meters), they found a platform of oak logs. They discovered similar platforms at 20 and 30 feet before abandoning the search.
Later groups continued the excavation, reporting an astonishingly systematic structure. The Onslow Company, in 1803, reported oak platforms at every 10-foot interval down to 90 feet (27 meters). Layers of charcoal, putty, and coconut fiber were also found between the platforms. At 90 feet, they allegedly found a stone slab with inscribed symbols. The most persistent feature of the pit appeared when excavators reached a depth of approximately 93 feet: seawater flooded the shaft, rising and falling with the tide. Despite using powerful pumps, some capable of removing 800 gallons per minute, no team has ever been able to keep the pit dry. This has led to the theory of a deliberately built booby trap—a system of flood tunnels designed to protect whatever lies at the bottom.
The science of the search
The source of the flooding appears to be an elaborate water trap. In the 1850s, searchers discovered a man-made beach at Smith's Cove, with layers of coconut fiber and eelgrass over five fan-shaped box drains made of stone. These drains converged and were believed to connect to the Money Pit via a 500-foot tunnel. Dye tests have confirmed a hydraulic connection between the pit and the surrounding ocean, but whether this is through an artificial tunnel or natural geology remains debated.
The island's geology is a potential scientific explanation. The eastern end of Oak Island is a drumlin—a hill of glacial till—sitting on top of soft bedrock like limestone and gypsum. These rocks are susceptible to dissolution by groundwater, creating a landscape of natural caves and sinkholes known as karst topography. Some geoscientists propose the Money Pit is a natural sinkhole that has accumulated debris over millennia, and the "flood tunnels" are simply natural water-filled cavities.
Modern scientific analysis has added complexity. Radiocarbon dating of wood artifacts has produced a wide range of dates, from as early as 1575 to the 1700s. A lead cross found at Smith's Cove contains lead with an isotopic signature matching medieval-era mines in southern France. DNA analysis of human bone fragments found deep in the pit revealed one individual of European descent and another of Middle Eastern origin, both dating back centuries. Non-native coconut fiber, also subjected to carbon dating, returned a date range between 1260 and 1400 AD. These findings dispute a simple sinkhole theory but have not yet solved the central puzzle.
