An outpost of the cryosphere
Mount Khakaborazi, at 5,881 meters, is the highest peak in Southeast Asia and an extension of the Greater Himalayan mountain system. Located in the remote northern Kachin State of Myanmar, it sits near the tri-border area with India and China. The mountain's upper reaches, above roughly 4,600 meters, are dominated by a cold, windswept terrain with permanent snowfields and glaciers. Around 5,300 meters, a large ice cap forms, feeding several outlet glaciers that are the sole glaciers in all of Southeast Asia.
These small but significant ice bodies are located at the headwaters of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River, a significant waterway for Myanmar. A 2018 study using satellite imagery from 1976 to 2015 revealed that the 130 glaciers in the Ayeyarwady headwaters are experiencing rapid losses. Over this 39-year period, the glaciers lost up to 54.3% of their area and approximately 60% of their total mass and volume. The rate of retreat has accelerated, with the most significant losses occurring between 2002 and 2015. The annual area retreat rate of around 1.39% in this region exceeds the average rates observed in Southeast and Central Asia, indicating that these glaciers are exceptionally sensitive to changes in climate.
A vertical world of biodiversity
The extreme elevation gradient on and around Mount Khakaborazi has created a wide range of ecosystems, from tropical rainforest to alpine meadows. The mountain is within Hkakaborazi National Park, which covers 3,810 square kilometers and was established in 1998. This park is part of a larger transboundary conservation landscape.
The biodiversity is high due to the convergence of three major biogeographical zones: Palearctic, Indo-Malayan, and Indo-Chinese. The flora includes over 297 tree species and 106 orchid species, including the endemic black orchid, Paphiopedilum wardii. The forest zones change distinctly with altitude. Broad-leaved evergreen rainforest dominates the lowlands, transitioning to a subtropical temperate zone between 2,400 and 2,700 meters, and eventually to needle-leaved snow forests. Above 3,400 meters, an alpine zone gives way to the permanent snow and ice. This ecological variety supports a variety of fauna, including endangered species like the red panda (Ailurus fulgens), takin (Budorcas taxicolor), and the endemic leaf deer (Muntiacus putaoensis). The area is an Important Bird Area, with 442 species recorded. The scientific exploration of this region is still in its early stages, with new species continuing to be described.

The height of Mount Khakaborazi, officially 5,881 meters since a 1925 British survey, is now disputed. A 2013 expedition measured the nearby peak of Gamlang Razi at 5,870 meters with modern GPS, suggesting it might be the true highest peak, as Khakaborazi's exact height has never been confirmed with the same technology.
The first successful ascent of the mountain was not until September 15, 1996, by Japanese mountaineer Takashi Ozaki and Myanmar guide Nyima Gyaltsen.
The region around the mountain is a global biodiversity hotspot, where botanists have identified huge rhododendron trees with circumferences of three to four meters.
A 2014 expedition sponsored by National Geographic and The North Face attempted to settle the height debate but had to turn back at 5,742 meters, estimating the summit was another 240 meters higher.
Access to the national park and mountain is by special arrangement and permit only, typically requiring a guided expedition. There are no standard opening hours.
