A geologic anomaly
Mount Magnitnaya, or the Magnetic Mountain, is a geological feature on the eastern slope of the southern Ural Mountains. Its immense iron deposits originated in the Lower Carboniferous period, roughly 350 million years ago. The formation resulted of contact metamorphism, where magma intruded into sedimentary rocks like limestone and sandstone. This intense heat and pressure created a massive deposit of magnetite, a naturally magnetic iron ore.
Before industrial exploitation, Magnitnaya was a cluster of peaks, the highest reaching 616 meters. The ore body was exceptionally high-grade, containing up to 60% iron, with some estimates reaching 70%. Early tests in 1740 showed that 100 pounds of its "magnetic stones" could yield 75 pounds of iron. This concentration is so high that the mountain created a significant magnetic anomaly, a distortion in the Earth's local magnetic field that renders standard compasses useless in its vicinity. The total area of the anomalous mountain group, which includes several smaller peaks, covers about 25 square kilometers.
