Gondwana's geological history
The terrain carved by the Maduru Oya river shows Earth's deep past. Over 90 percent of Sri Lanka's surface is Precambrian rock, with some dating back two billion years. These ancient formations are part of a geological unit known as the Highland Complex, which forms the country's central core. The rocks here are primarily high-grade metamorphic types, meaning they were transformed by intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth's crust. This process occurred during mountain-building events as part of the supercontinent Gondwana.
The Maduru Oya, a 135-kilometer-long river, originates in these central highlands and flows eastward, slicing through the landscape. Its erosive power has created an undulating peneplain, a nearly flat land surface shaped by long-term erosion, and exposed the basement rock. The area is an important location for understanding the tectonic and metamorphic processes that shaped continents.
The Charnockite Story
Among the most significant rocks exposed along the Maduru Oya are charnockites. Charnockite is a type of orthopyroxene-bearing granitic rock, formed under the extreme temperature and pressure conditions of the granulite facies, the highest grade of metamorphism. These rocks are markers of deep crustal processes and are common in Precambrian shields around the world, including India and Antarctica, which were once connected to Sri Lanka as part of Gondwana.
The charnockites in the Highland Complex appear alongside other metamorphic rocks like gneisses, quartzites, and marbles. Their presence indicates an anhydrous, or water-poor, environment during their formation, likely deep within the continental crust. In some areas, geologists observe a phenomenon called "arrested charnockitization," where patches or veins of charnockite appear within a host rock of gneiss. This is a site for studying how these rocks transform. The process is thought to be driven by the infiltration of carbon dioxide-rich fluids, which triggers the dehydration and conversion of the host rock into charnockite.
