Growing wine in a volcano's shadow
In the La Geria region of Lanzarote, thousands of man-made craters pit a landscape of black volcanic ash. At the bottom of each pit, or hoyo, a single grapevine (Vitis vinifera) grows. This cultivation method responds directly to the island's near-desert climate and a catastrophic geological event. The island receives only 100 to 150 mm of rainfall annually, making conventional agriculture nearly impossible. This system uses no irrigation.
The technique relies on the properties of the volcanic gravel, known locally as picón or lapilli. Farmers dig pits between 2 and 3 meters deep and 3 to 4 meters wide, clearing the ash to reach the fertile soil buried beneath. The layer of black picón then is a natural mulch. Its high porosity allows it to absorb atmospheric moisture from dew and the humid Atlantic trade winds. During the day, this same layer prevents the captured moisture from evaporating under the sun, slowly releasing it to the vine's roots. The dark color of the ash also absorbs solar radiation, increasing soil temperature which helps the grapes to ripen. To complete the system, a low, semi-circular rock wall, or zoco, is built around the windward side of each pit. These walls shield the vines from the persistent, drying trade winds that blow across the island.
A landscape born from disaster
This agricultural landscape was created by the eruptions of the Timanfaya volcano, which lasted for six years between 1730 and 1736. The eruptions covered roughly a quarter of the island, including its most fertile farmland, with a thick layer of lava and ash. Farmers discovered that while the ash buried the soil, it also provided a unique medium for dry cultivation.
The primary grape grown in this system is the Malvasia Volcánica, a variety unique to the Canary Islands. It is a cross between the Malvasia di Lipari and Marmajuelo grapes. The resulting wines are have distinct mineral and saline notes, products of the volcanic soil and ocean air. The entire cultivation process, from digging the pits to harvesting the grapes, is done manually. Yields are extremely low, often between 1,000 and 1,500 kilograms per hectare, compared to regions like Bordeaux where densities can reach 8,000 vines per hectare. The region was granted Denominación de Origen (DO) status, a formal designation for quality wine regions, and the landscape is recognized as a Protected Area.
