An Arctic animal in fresh water
Deep within Lake Ladoga, the largest lake in Europe, lives an isolated population of freshwater seals. Known as the Ladoga ringed seal (Pusa hispida ladogensis), this animal is a subspecies of the Arctic ringed seal. Its presence so far from any ocean is because of the last Ice Age. These seals are smaller than their marine relatives, typically reaching about 150 cm in length and weighing between 60 and 70 kg. Their coats are generally dark brown or grey with characteristic light-colored, ring-shaped patterns.
The population is concentrated in the northern parts of the lake, which are deeper and colder, with depths reaching up to 230 meters. The rocky islands of the Valaam and Mantsinsaari Archipelagos are haul-out sites for resting and breeding. Like their Arctic ancestors, Ladoga seals are pagophilic, meaning they depend on ice. In late February and March, females build snow lairs on the lake ice to give birth to a single pup. This behavior links to their glacial past. Their diet consists of the lake's abundant small fish, primarily smelt and vendace.
The current population is estimated to be around 2,000 to 3,000 individuals, a significant drop from an estimated 20,000 at the start of the 20th century. Overhunting severely depleted their numbers until a ban was enacted in 1980. Today, the primary threats are entanglement in fishing gear, pollution from industrial activity around the lake, and the reduction of stable winter ice due to climate change, which impacts the survival of pups. The subspecies is listed as vulnerable and is protected in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation.
A tale of two theories
The theory for the Ladoga seal's origin points to events at the end of the Weichselian glaciation. Around 11,700 years ago, as the massive Fennoscandian Ice Sheet melted, the Baltic Sea basin was a freshwater body known as the Ancylus Lake. This lake was connected to Lake Ladoga via a strait. Ringed seals, following the retreating ice edge, populated this extensive freshwater system.
As the weight of the ice disappeared, the Earth's crust began to rise in a process called post-glacial isostatic rebound. This geological uplift was not uniform. The land around Lake Ladoga rose, and around 8,800 years ago, the connection to the Ancylus Lake was severed. This event trapped a population of seals, isolating them permanently in what became the modern Lake Ladoga. Genetic studies support this timeline, suggesting the Ladoga seal has been isolated for approximately 10,000 years.
A less accepted hypothesis suggests the seals migrated into the lake more recently. This theory proposes that seals could have traveled from the Baltic Sea up the Neva River system. While geographically possible, the significant distance and rapids make this an unlikely path for a large-scale migration. Recent genetic analyses have added complexity to the story, suggesting that the evolutionary history of seals in the Fennoscandian region might involve multiple colonization events from the Arctic, but the glacial relict model for the Ladoga seals remains the most consistent with geological evidence.
