Deep-Time Plumbing
The Krasnodar mud volcanoes are surface expressions of geology deep underground. They are concentrated on the Taman Peninsula, part of the larger Kerch-Taman mud volcanic province. This region is a zone of tectonic compression between the Caucasus Mountains and the Crimean Orogen. The immense pressure squeezes thick, plastic clays of the Oligocene-Miocene Maikop Series, which can be up to 3,000 meters thick.
This process forces the clay, mixed with water and gases, upward through faults and fractures. The primary gas is methane, produced by the thermal decomposition of ancient organic matter buried in the sediments. The mud originates from depths of 2 to 9 kilometers, bringing a slurry of deep-earth material to the surface. The mud is cold, with temperatures near ambient ground temperature. The landscape is dotted with dozens of these structures, from small, bubbling pools called salses to large cones, like the Akhtanizovskaya Sopka, which stands about 40 meters high.
A Mineral-Rich Eruption
The ejected mud, or breccia, is a complex mixture of clay, rock fragments, water, and dissolved minerals. Its composition is a direct sample of deep sedimentary layers. The mud is rich in elements like boron, iodine, bromine, and sulfur. This mineral content leads to its use in local balneotherapy, or medicinal bathing. Several commercial complexes, like those at the Tizdar and Hephaestus (also called Rotten Mountain) volcanoes, offer open-air mud pools for tourists. The density of the mud at the Tizdar crater is high enough, at 1550 kg/m³, to make a person float effortlessly.
The methane gas that constantly bubbles to the surface is flammable. While large, fiery eruptions are rare, the gas can ignite, creating flames that shoot into the air. An eruption of the Karabetova Gora mud volcano in 2000 produced a gas flare that lasted for about 15 minutes. This phenomenon has led to some volcanoes being called "blue flames" or having other fire-related local names. The microbial life in this environment is also a subject of scientific study, with unique bacteria and archaea that metabolize methane being discovered in the mud.
