A genetic dragnet for poachers
In the grasslands of Assam, India, a high-tech battle is underway to protect the greater one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis). Kaziranga National Park is home to the world's largest population of this species, making it a primary target for poachers seeking its valuable horn. To counter this threat, scientists and law enforcement have turned to forensic science, creating a DNA database that can link a poacher to a specific crime scene with remarkable precision.
This initiative, known as the Rhino DNA Index System (RhODIS-India), was launched in 2016 and is modeled after a successful South African program. The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) in Dehradun manages the project, which systematically catalogues the unique genetic profile of every rhino possible. Samples are collected from horns, tissue, blood, and even dung. Each rhino possesses a unique DNA signature, similar to a human fingerprint. Scientists use a panel of genetic markers, called short tandem repeats (STRs), to create a distinct profile for each animal. This profile is then entered into a centralized, secure database. As of July 2020, the RhODIS-India database contained profiles for over 500 individual rhinos.
The process treats every poached rhino as a crime scene. When a carcass is found, forensic teams collect tissue samples. When enforcement agencies confiscate a horn anywhere in the world, a small sample—sometimes less than 20 milligrams—is sent to the WII lab for analysis. Technicians generate a DNA profile from the horn and compare it against the database, looking for a match with a known living or dead rhino.
From the lab to the courtroom
A successful DNA match provides an irrefutable link between a trafficker and a specific dead animal. This forensic evidence is admissible in Indian courts and has become a powerful tool for prosecutors. It transforms an anonymous piece of contraband into direct evidence of a poaching event, helping to secure convictions that were previously difficult to obtain. Between 2011 and 2017 in Assam, convictions for rhino poaching grew significantly, a change attributed to better crime investigation, including the use of forensic tools. The first case under the RhODIS-India program was investigated in 2017, successfully linking a horn seized near Guwahati to a carcass found in North Bengal.
The applications extend beyond national borders. By identifying the origin of a seized horn, investigators can map trafficking routes and identify poaching hotspots. This genetic information helps dismantle the international criminal networks that smuggle horn to consumer markets.
In a powerful action against the illegal trade on World Rhino Day, September 22, 2021, the Assam government burned 2,479 rhino horns to dispel myths about their medicinal value. Critically, samples from these horns were taken before the event to be added to the growing DNA database, further strengthening this scientific shield protecting Kaziranga's rhinos.
