An ecosystem in total darkness
Deep within the Kanger Valley National Park, a 200-square-kilometer protected area in Chhattisgarh, lies a series of subterranean limestone caves. The most famous of these is Kutumsar Cave, a network of passages and chambers extending for more than a kilometer, with some sections reaching 35 meters below ground. Inside these caves, there is perpetual darkness and a stable year-round temperature of about 28°C. This lightless environment, seemingly hostile to life, contains a complex ecosystem. The entire food web is built on a single, nutrient resource: bat guano.
Colonies of bats, including the Rufous horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus rouxii) and Ashy leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros cineraceus), use the caves as roosts. Their accumulated droppings, or guano, cover the cave floor, providing the primary energy source for the entire system. Fungi and bacteria first colonize the guano, breaking it down and releasing its nutrients. This initial decomposition supports a host of invertebrates. Cave crickets, such as Kempiola shankari, and various species of millipedes, centipedes, and beetles feed on the guano and the microorganisms within it. These creatures, in turn, become prey for predators higher up the food chain, such as cave-dwelling spiders and the Small Indian Civet (Viverricula indica), which sometimes ventures into the twilight zones.
Life without light
The long-term inhabitants of the Kanger Valley caves show remarkable adaptations to their sunless world. These organisms, known as troglobites, have evolved over countless generations in isolation from the surface. The most well-known resident is a species of blind cavefish, Indoreonectes evezardi. Having lost its eyes and pigmentation, this fish navigates the cave's pools and streams using heightened senses. Its body is equipped with a sensitive lateral line system that detects minute changes in water pressure, allowing it to "feel" its surroundings and locate food.
Other cave-adapted arthropods also display troglobitic traits. Many insects and arachnids have elongated legs and antennae, which improve their sensory perception in the dark. The complete absence of light makes vision useless, and many species have reduced or absent eyes. The entire community is a specialized example of chemosynthesis-based life, where the chemical energy locked in bat guano replaces the solar energy that powers almost every other ecosystem on the planet. This delicate food web, from bat to bacteria to blind fish, demonstrates a unique evolutionary path forged in one of India's longest cave systems.
