An Archipelago of Mountains
The far north of Myanmar's Kachin State contains the southern end of the Hengduan Mountains, a series of steep, parallel ranges separated by deep river gorges. This landscape, where elevations climb from 500 meters to over 5,800 meters, creates a unique ecological phenomenon: "sky islands". High-altitude peaks are separated from one another by warm, low-lying valleys, forming isolated habitats. For plants adapted to the cool, temperate conditions of the upper slopes, these valleys are impassable barriers, preventing gene flow as effectively as an ocean isolates a terrestrial island.
This geographic isolation is a powerful engine for evolution. Plant populations on one mountain crest cannot interbreed with those on the next, allowing them to follow separate evolutionary paths. Over thousands of years, genetic drift and adaptation to slightly different local conditions cause the isolated populations to diverge. This process has resulted in an explosion of biodiversity. The mountains of Kachin State, particularly within Hkakabo Razi National Park, are a center for rhododendron diversity. The region sits at the convergence of three biogeographical zones—Eurasian, Indian, and Indochinese—further contributing to its high species richness and endemism.
A Genetic Burst of Color
Molecular studies confirm that the variety of rhododendrons in this area is the result of rapid, recent speciation. Phylogenetic analysis of numerous plant species in the greater Hengduan region shows a significant increase in the rate of species differentiation beginning around 8 million years ago, a period that coincides with the rapid uplift of these mountains. This geological activity created the network of isolated sky islands that exists today.
Within the genus Rhododendron, hybridization is common between species in the same subgenus when they occur together. However, the physical separation of populations on different mountains prevents this mixing. As a result, Kachin State hosts numerous endemic species found nowhere else. The alpine zones, above 3,350 meters, host species like the plum-flowered Rhododendron pruniflorum and Rhododendron selense. Some species grow as huge trees, with trunks measuring three to four meters in circumference, while others are epiphytes, growing on other trees high in the forest canopy. The work of early 20th-century plant collectors like Frank Kingdon-Ward and Reginald Farrer first brought the scale of this diversity to the world's attention. Farrer alone collected specimens of 118 rhododendrons in northern Myanmar, 24 of which were new to science. Modern explorers continue to find new species in the region's less-explored ranges.
