The world underground
Hin Nam No National Park is a landscape of jagged limestone spires and hidden valleys, but its most unusual life exists underground. The park sits on a vast karst plateau, a geological formation created by the dissolution of limestone over hundreds of millions of years. This process has riddled the region with more than 173 documented caves and over 220 kilometers of underground rivers, creating a massive subterranean ecosystem. Many of these caves host troglobites—animals that have adapted to live their entire lives in complete darkness.
The most prominent examples are several species of eyeless cave fish. Having evolved in perpetual darkness, these fish have lost their sight and pigmentation. They navigate and hunt by sensing subtle changes in water pressure and movement. This subterranean world is a habitat for highly specialized and endemic species, with some invertebrate and fish species restricted to a single cave system. Beyond fish, the caves harbor a unique scorpion, Vietbocap lao, which shows extreme adaptation to cave life with a total lack of pigmentation and a weakly sclerotized body. The Giant Huntsman spider, which has the largest leg span of any spider in the world, is also endemic to the caves in Khammouane Province.
A forest canopy of specialists
The biodiversity above ground is just as specific to the environment. The park’s 94,121 hectares contain a mosaic of forest types, from evergreen forests on the valley floors to specialized karst forests clinging to the limestone cliffs. This landscape supports over 1,500 species of vascular plants and 536 species of vertebrates. The isolation created by the rugged terrain allows for unique evolutionary paths. The park is an important habitat for seven species of primates, including the endangered red-shanked douc langur and the southern white-cheeked gibbon.
The flora includes numerous endemic species of orchids and begonias found only in this specific karst environment. The region also contains newly discovered species that are highly adapted to the limestone. In 2022, scientists identified a new genus and species of lizard, Laodracon carsticola, the Khammouan Karst Dragon. This medium-sized black and white lizard lives exclusively high on the steep, nearly inaccessible karst pinnacles, a habitat that likely kept it hidden from science for so long. The park's contiguity with Vietnam's Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park creates a single, transboundary conservation area, one of the largest protected karst regions in the world.
