In a remote part of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park stands a piece of equipment usually seen in city centers: a tower crane. This structure is approximately 80 meters tall, with a horizontal jib, or arm, that measures 75 meters long. It was not placed here to construct a building. Instead, it provides scientists three-dimensional access to what is the "last biotic frontier"—the forest canopy.
From a control cabin, an operator maneuvers a small, welded-steel cage called a gondola, which can carry researchers and their equipment. The gondola moves up and down from the forest floor and along the length of the jib. As the entire crane rotates 360 degrees, it gives scientists repeatable, non-destructive access to a large circular plot of forest. This method allows for detailed and long-term experiments in the treetops, a zone that is exceptionally difficult to study using traditional methods like rope climbing.
Cataloging the Canopy
The crane's primary function is to allow close-up study of the forest ecosystem. Researchers in the gondola can collect samples and take measurements from any part of the canopy within the crane's reach, from the highest leaves to the deepest branches. A major focus is the inventory of biodiversity, particularly of insects and other arthropods, many of which are still unknown to science.
The machine also facilitates research into epiphytes—plants such as orchids and ferns that grow on the surfaces of trees. Scientists examine how these organisms contribute to the forest's overall health. This section of the park is home to the Hainan gibbon (Nomascus hainanus), the world's most endangered primate. The crane helps study their habitat without disturbing the animals. The data collected here also helps scientists understand how the rainforest exchanges carbon, water, and energy with the atmosphere, showing its role in regional and global climate patterns.
