A Plateau Built by Fluid Lavas
Hachimantai is a shield volcano, and it lacks the typical cone shape. Instead, it presents a broad, flat-topped plateau reaching an elevation of 1,613 meters. This distinctive shape is a direct result of the chemical composition of its magma. The volcano erupted lavas—primarily andesite and basalt—with a relatively low silica (SiO2) content, ranging from 50.7% to 68.6%. Low-silica magmas have a lower viscosity, meaning they flow more easily and can travel great distances before cooling. Instead of piling up steeply around a central vent, these fluid lavas spread out in wide, thin sheets, building up a vast, gentle-sloped plateau over successive eruptions.
The volcanic activity that formed this landscape occurred in at least three major periods, beginning between 0.7 and 1 million years ago during the Pleistocene. The most recent eruptive activity is estimated to have occurred more than 7,000 years ago, though the area still shows signs of life with active solfataras and major gas emissions. This unique formation process makes Hachimantai the type locality for this specific form of flat-topped volcanic plateau. The landscape is a part of the greater Towada-Hachimantai National Park.
A Summit of Marshes and a Dragon's Eye
The flat, expansive summit of Hachimantai has become a unique high-altitude ecosystem. The gentle topography allows water to collect, creating a landscape dotted with numerous marshes and crater ponds, such as the Hachiman-numa pond. This environment supports a wide variety of alpine plants that thrive in the wet, volcanic soil. Well-maintained boardwalks and trails allow visitors to explore these highland wetlands.
One of the most remarkable features is Kagami-numa, or "Mirror Pond." For a few weeks each year, typically from late May to early June, a striking natural phenomenon known as the "Hachimantai Dragon Eye" appears here. As the winter snow and ice on the pond melt, the remaining snow forms a distinct ring in the center, which fills with turquoise meltwater. From above, the circular shape of the snow and the deep blue water create the uncanny illusion of a giant eye staring at the sky. This fleeting spectacle is a result of the interaction between the pond's circular shape, wind patterns, and the physics of melting snow.
