A Paleoproterozoic Bedrock
The vast rainforest of French Guiana rests on the Guiana Shield, one of the planet's oldest and most stable blocks of continental crust. The rocks here are predominantly from the Precambrian, with many formations dating back 1.7 to 2.2 billion years. This ancient geological foundation was assembled during the Trans-Amazonian Orogeny, a major mountain-building event that occurred between 2.26 and 1.95 billion years ago. This process involved the collision and fusion of smaller, older Archean continental fragments, creating the stable core, or craton, that exists today.
The shield's geology in French Guiana is a complex mosaic of metamorphic and igneous rocks. It includes extensive areas of granite and gneiss, alongside distinct "greenstone belts." These belts, such as the Paramaca series, are composed of metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks. They are the remnants of ancient volcanic island arcs and seafloor basins. The rocks within these belts were originally basalts, andesites, and sedimentary graywackes before being altered by heat and pressure. The formation of these belts was an important part of the crustal growth during the Trans-Amazonian period, which involved both the creation of new juvenile crust and the recycling of older Archean material.
This entire geological province was once connected to the West African Craton. The two shields were part of a single landmass before the Atlantic Ocean began to open, splitting them apart. The geological similarities between the Guiana Shield and its West African counterpart provide clear evidence of their shared history.
A Landscape of Minerals and Water
The ancient nature of the Guiana Shield's bedrock directly shapes its modern landscape and resources. Billions of years of erosion have worn the surface down, but the hard, crystalline rocks resist weathering. This process creates a topography of low, rolling hills and isolated rock outcrops known as inselbergs. The soil derived from this ancient rock is typically nutrient-poor laterite, which in turn influences the unique composition of the overlying Amazonian rainforest.
The same geological processes that formed the shield also concentrated significant mineral deposits. French Guiana is known for its gold, which is primarily found within the quartz veins and altered rocks of the Paleoproterozoic greenstone belts. Gold mining, both industrial and small-scale, is a major economic activity in the region.
In addition to gold, the shield contains deposits of bauxite, the ore of aluminum, which forms from the intense, long-term weathering of the granitic and gneissic rocks. Other mineral resources identified in the region include niobium, tantalum, copper, lead, and zinc. The name "Guiana" is often said to derive from an Amerindian word for "land of many waters," a fitting description for a landscape defined by countless rivers carving their paths across this impermeable, ancient rock foundation.
