The Giant Southern Lizard
On July 25, 1993, amateur fossil hunter Rubén Darío Carolini was driving his dune buggy through the badlands of Argentina's Neuquén Province when he spotted a massive leg bone, a tibia, jutting from the earth. This discovery led paleontologists Rodolfo Coria and Leonardo Salgado to a remarkable find: a 70% complete skeleton of a previously unknown giant theropod dinosaur. The fossilized bones were scattered over an area of about 10 square meters. In 1995, Coria and Salgado formally named the creature Giganotosaurus carolinii. The name means "giant southern lizard of Carolini," honoring both its colossal size and its discoverer.
The holotype specimen, cataloged as MUCPv-Ch1, includes a significant portion of the skull, most of the vertebral column, the pelvis, and leg bones. This skeleton revealed an animal estimated to be between 12 and 13 meters (39 to 43 feet) long, with a weight ranging from 6 to 13.8 metric tons. The skull of the holotype is estimated to be between 1.53 and 1.80 meters (5.0 to 5.9 feet) long, surpassing the size of the largest known Tyrannosaurus rex skulls. The bones are housed and displayed in the Ernesto Bachmann Paleontological Museum in Villa El Chocón, a facility created specifically to shows this find.
A Cretaceous Apex Predator
Giganotosaurus lived during the early Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous, approximately 99.6 to 97 million years ago. Its remains were unearthed from the Candeleros Formation, a geological layer representing an ancient environment of braided river systems and swamps. This ecosystem contained some of the largest dinosaurs ever to live, including the giant titanosaurian sauropods Andesaurus and Limaysaurus, which were likely prey for Giganotosaurus.
As a member of the Carcharodontosauridae family, or "shark-toothed lizards," Giganotosaurus possessed long, serrated teeth up to 20 cm long, perfectly adapted for slicing through flesh. Although longer and taller than T. rex, its skeleton was more slender, and its bite force is estimated to have been about three times weaker. Its long, narrow skull was built for delivering rapid, slashing bites rather than crushing bone. Evidence from a closely related dinosaur, Mapusaurus, suggests that these massive carnivores may have hunted in groups to take down their enormous sauropod prey.
