A cradle of evolution
Fitzgerald River National Park is a global biodiversity area, covering 329,882 hectares on Western Australia's southern coast. Its botanical importance is significant; the park contains 1,748 identified plant species, representing nearly 20% of the state's total. Of these, 75 species are endemic, found only within the park's boundaries, and another 250 are considered rare.
This extreme plant diversity is a product of the park's ancient and nutrient-poor soils. The rugged coastal ranges, including the Barrens, are composed of quartzites and schists that formed around 1.3 billion years ago. These infertile conditions prevent dominant species from taking over, allowing a wide variety of specialized plants to thrive. Many have evolved unique methods to survive, such as specialized root structures or symbiotic relationships with soil fungi.
The park is the core of the Fitzgerald Biosphere, a designation granted by UNESCO in 1978 to recognize of its unique ecology. Well-represented plant families include Proteaceae, with species like Royal Hakea (Hakea victoria), and Myrtaceae, which includes 80 species of eucalypts. The park also has for the Qualup Bell (Pimelea physodes), a plant with distinctive hanging flowers found almost exclusively in this area.
An isolated refuge for fauna
The park's unique flora supports a correspondingly diverse animal population, with more recorded mammal, bird, and frog species than any other reserve in southwest Australia. It hosts 22 mammal species, over 200 bird species, and 41 reptile species.
Among its residents is the Dibbler (Parantechinus apicalis), a small carnivorous marsupial. For 83 years, the Dibbler was thought to be extinct until its rediscovery in 1967. The park remains one of the few mainland areas where this endangered animal is found. Another rediscovered species, the Heath Rat (Pseudomys shortridgei), also inhabits the park.
The park's coastline provides a critical habitat for marine life. The sheltered bays around Point Ann are one of two major calving areas in Australia for the Southern Right Whale (Eubalaena australis). Between June and October, these whales arrive to give birth and nurse their young, making the park's lookouts prime whale-watching locations.
