The Ghost from the Undergrowth
Deep in the damp, shaded leaf litter of tropical Malaysian forests, a strange plant appears as if from nowhere. With no leaves and a pale and fleshy stem, Didymoplexis pallens pushes through the forest floor for a brief and mysterious appearance. This plant, sometimes called crystal bells, is a fully mycoheterotrophic orchid. Lacking chlorophyll, it cannot perform photosynthesis and instead derives all its nutrients by parasitizing fungi in the soil.
The visible part of the orchid is a flowering stem, or inflorescence, that grows between 60 to 250 millimeters tall. This pale brown, yellowish, or whitish stem carries between five and fifteen small, bell-shaped flowers. The flowers themselves are only about 6-8 mm long and may be white, pinkish, or brownish. They are short-lived, with only one or two opening at a time, each lasting less than a day. The entire plant is only visible above ground for a fleeting three to five weeks before vanishing completely.
A Parasite on a Fungus
Didymoplexis pallens survives through a complex three-part relationship. The orchid's life is sustained by subterranean fungi, which in turn are breaking down dead organic material in the soil, such as leaf litter. This makes the orchid a parasite—it taps into the nutrient cycle without contributing through photosynthesis. Molecular analysis has identified its primary fungal partners as litter-decaying fungi from genera like Mycena, Clitocybula, and Marasmius.
For most of its life, the orchid exists only as a fleshy horizontal rhizome hidden underground. This tuberous root structure can persist for many years, slowly drawing energy from its fungal hosts. When enough energy is stored and environmental triggers like heavy rains occur, the orchid sends up its ephemeral flowering stalk to reproduce. After flowering, a transformation occurs: the stalk holding the fertilized flower elongates rapidly. This pushes the developing seed capsule up and away from the dense leaf litter, improving the chances that its dust-like seeds will be dispersed by the wind.
