A Triple Junction Cauldron
The Danakil Depression is a geological site at the Afar Triple Junction, a point where the African, Somali, and Arabian tectonic plates are actively pulling apart. This relentless stretching thins the Earth's crust, causing the land to sink to more than 120 meters below sea level. A shallow magma chamber heats groundwater that rises to the surface, dissolving a thick layer of salt left by an ancient evaporated arm of the Red Sea.
When this superheated, pressurized brine emerges, it creates the Dallol hydrothermal system—a region of otherworldly springs and pools. The water can be near-boiling, with temperatures recorded over 100°C (212°F). The pools are also extraordinarily acidic, with some reaching a pH value of 0, making them some of the most acidic naturally occurring waters on the planet. The bright colors are not biological. The brilliant yellows are created by high concentrations of sulfur, while copper salts produce turquoise greens, and iron oxides form rust-red and orange crusts. The air itself is often thick with toxic chlorine and sulfur vapors.
An Analog for Mars
This hostile combination of extreme heat, hypersalinity, and hyperacidity makes the Danakil Depression a prime location for astrobiological research. Scientists consider the environment a strong terrestrial analog for conditions that may have existed on early Mars. By studying the limits of life here, researchers can understand what biosignatures to search for on other planets.
life exists here, but it is pushed to its absolute limits. The organisms that survive are called polyextremophiles—microbes adapted to multiple extreme conditions simultaneously. Researchers have extracted DNA from ultra-small bacteria, up to 20 times smaller than average bacteria, found within the salt formations. These archaea and bacteria possess unique adaptations to thrive in the hot and acidic brine. The study of these lifeforms shows how life might survive in the harsh environments believed to exist beyond Earth.
