A natural wind corridor
Daegwallyeong is a high mountain pass, 832 meters (2,730 ft) up in the Taebaek Mountains of eastern South Korea. This elevation places it in a unique climatic zone, making it the area with the lowest average temperature in the country. The annual mean temperature is a cool 7.0°C (44.6°F), with winter averages in January dipping to -6.9°C (19.6°F), comparable to Moscow. The pass acts as a geographical funnel, channeling strong, consistent winds that blow inland from the East Sea. This phenomenon results from its position on the spine of the Korean Peninsula, where Siberian high pressure meets moist sea air, especially in winter.
The constant, fierce winds made the area historically inhospitable for permanent settlement. While the pass was an important transit route connecting the coastal and inland regions since at least the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BCE–668 CE), the immediate high-altitude area was not suitable for agriculture or raising livestock. The wind is so persistent that it shapes the local ecology and creates hazardous travel conditions with frequent blizzards and fog in the winter. This challenging environment contains an ideal resource for modern energy production.
Harnessing the gales
The same winds that deterred early settlement now power the Daegwallyeong Wind Farm, one of South Korea's largest onshore wind power installations. The facility, operated by Gangwon Wind Power, has a total installed capacity of 98 megawatts (MW). The turbines are primarily Vestas V80 2.0 MW models, each capable of generating 2 MW of power. These machines are specifically designed to operate in these conditions, with a cut-in wind speed of 3 meters per second and reaching maximum power output at 15 meters per second.
The placement of these turbines is not random; it is the result of careful wind engineering and layout optimization to maximize energy production while minimizing the "wake effect," where turbines disrupt the airflow for those behind them. Studies show that optimizing the layout could increase energy production by as much as 2.5% compared to the existing arrangement. The wind farm is part of the landscape, with many of the turbines located on the grounds of the vast Daegwallyeong Samyang Ranch, a 19.8 square kilometer highland farm.
