A Landscape Forged by Flame
The vast Iberá Wetlands of Corrientes Province, one of the largest freshwater wetland systems on Earth, appear timeless. This mosaic of over 1.3 million hectares of marsh, grassland savanna, and forest is not a static environment. It is a landscape shaped and maintained by a powerful, periodic force: fire. The region's grasslands are fire-dependent ecosystems, historically experiencing frequent, low-intensity burns that clear out dead organic matter, recycle nutrients, and prevent the landscape from succeeding into dense woodland.
Fire suppression, often implemented to protect agricultural and forestry interests, disrupts this natural process. Without the regular clearing effect of fire, native woody plants and shrubs begin to take over the open grasslands. This process, known as woody plant encroachment, fundamentally alters the structure of the ecosystem. Open savannas shrink and fragment, replaced by dense thickets that are unsuitable for the specialized grassland species that have evolved with fire over millennia. This gradual shift changes the habitat for a variety of wildlife, from insects to large mammals.
The consequences of altering this fire regime were shown in early 2022. After a prolonged drought linked to a La Niña weather pattern, the accumulated fuel from years of fire suppression ignited. The resulting megafires were not the typical, healthy burns the ecosystem was adapted to. Instead, they were catastrophic, burning with an intensity and scale rarely seen. The fires consumed over 800,000 hectares, representing nearly 12% of the entire province and burning through an estimated 60% of Iberá National Park.
The 2022 Megafires: A System Unbalanced
The fires that raged across Corrientes from January to February 2022 were an ecological catastrophe driven by an imbalance in the natural fire cycle. A severe drought had left the region with less than 20 millimeters of rain, compared to a normal average of 162 millimeters for that period. This extreme water stress, combined with high temperatures, turned the unburned biomass into tinder. At their peak between February 7th and 16th, the fires were spreading at a rate of 30,000 hectares per day.
Satellite monitoring, including data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), tracked the event's exceptional nature. Estimated carbon emissions from the fires in Corrientes for January-February 2022 exceeded 5.5 megatonnes, a massive spike from the typical emissions of under 1 megatonne for that period since 2003. Remote sensing platforms like Google Earth Engine were used to analyze the burn severity, revealing that nearly 50% of the Iberá National Park had burned, with severity levels ranging from moderately high to high.
The impact on wildlife was devastating. Species like capybaras, caimans, and armadillos were killed in large numbers, unable to escape the fast-moving flames into dry or nonexistent wetlands. The fires also threatened critical rewilding projects within the park, which aim to reintroduce keystone species like the jaguar (Panthera onca), giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), and pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus). Conservation teams worked to evacuate some animals, such as giant river otters and red-and-green macaws, to safety. The event showed the difference between the ecosystem-maintaining role of traditional, low-intensity fires and the destructive power of modern megafires fueled by climate change and altered land management.
