Over a thousand invertebrate species have been identified, including spiders with tails (Chimerarachne yingi), "hell ants" (Ceratomyrmex), and the oldest known velvet worm (Cretoperipatus). The amber provides a detailed record of a Cretaceous forest ecosystem, capturing everything from insects and arachnids to lizards, frogs, and plant life.
An Ethical Minefield
The amber mines are located in a long-contested region. For years, armed groups like the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) have fought for control over this lucrative resource. The breakdown of a ceasefire in 2011 turned the Hukawng Valley into a militarized extraction zone. The amber trade, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, is alleged to fund both sides of the conflict. Miners often work in dangerous, unregulated conditions.
This situation creates a serious ethical problem for paleontologists. Myanmar law classifies amber as a gemstone, not a fossil, allowing it to be legally exported where fossils cannot. When scientists publish research on these specimens, it can increase their commercial value, potentially fueling the conflict. In response, scientific bodies have taken a stand. In 2020, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) called for a moratorium on publishing research on any amber specimens acquired from Myanmar after June 2017, when the military began a major campaign to seize the mines.
