A Region Primed for Salinization
The Aragon River, a major tributary of the Ebro, flows through a semi-arid region with a geological history that creates conditions for a modern agricultural crisis. The Ebro Basin is underlain by Miocene-era marine sediments, leaving the soil with many soluble salts like gypsum and halite. In a dry climate, these salts remain in the soil. The introduction of large-scale irrigation, particularly in regions like Monegros, fundamentally alters the water balance.
Water diverted from the Pyrenees, initially of high quality with low mineralization (around 300 μS/cm), is applied to fields. As this water percolates through the salt-laden soil, it dissolves and mobilizes these ancient mineral salts. The excess water, now saline, eventually drains back into the river system. This "irrigation return flow" is the main cause of the river's rising salinity. Studies in the Ebro basin show that depending on soil type and irrigation methods, between 3 and 16 metric tons of salt can be exported per hectare each year through this process. The result is a river system where the concentration of dissolved salts steadily increases downstream, creating significant environmental and economic problems.
Measuring a Slow Poison
The health of the river is tracked using electrical conductivity (EC), a measure of how well water conducts electricity, which is directly related to the amount of total dissolved solids (TDS), or salts. While fresh water from the Pyrenees starts with low conductivity, measurements in the lower Ebro have shown a dramatic increase. Average salinity is predicted to reach 1600 µS/cm, with seasonal peaks exceeding 2000 µS/cm. These levels surpass the European Union's guide value of 1000 µS/cm for water intended for drinking water preparation.
This salinized water, when re-used for irrigation, poisons the very crops it is meant to sustain. High salinity in irrigation water interferes with a plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, reducing growth and crop yields. Maize, a common crop in the region, is particularly sensitive to salinity, with yields affected when the soil's saturated extract conductivity (ECe) exceeds 1.7 dS/m. In some agricultural areas near the Ebro, soil samples show that over 70% are classified as very strongly saline, with ECe values greater than 16 dS/m. This creates a negative feedback loop where irrigation pollutes the river, and the polluted river then damages the agricultural land that depends on it. The problem affects an estimated 28% of Spain's entire river network.
