A terrestrial alignment
The Antequera Dolmens Site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, contains three megalithic tombs built during the Neolithic and Copper Age. Two of them—the Menga Dolmen and the Tholos of El Romeral—possess a feature that makes them unusual among European megalithic structures. Rather than aligning with the sun or stars, their chambers point toward prominent natural landmarks. This deliberate terrestrial orientation shows a sophisticated relationship between the prehistoric builders and their landscape.
The oldest and largest of the structures is the Menga Dolmen, constructed between 3750 and 3650 BCE. It is one of the biggest known megalithic structures in Europe, measuring 27.5 meters long and built from thirty-two massive stones. The largest capstone, weighing an estimated 150 metric tons, required immense planning and effort to move from its quarry. The tomb's central axis is aimed directly at the Peña de los Enamorados ("The Lover's Rock"), a limestone mountain whose profile looks like a reclining human face. The entrance of the dolmen precisely frames the mountain, creating a direct visual connection between the tomb and the anthropomorphic peak.
Celestial and geological counterparts
The Tholos of El Romeral, built later around 2500 BCE, displays a different construction style and a separate terrestrial alignment. It is a "tholos" or beehive-style tomb, built with smaller, stacked stones to create a false dome, a technique rare for the Iberian Peninsula. Its corridor points southwest, directly at the El Torcal mountain range, a dramatic landscape of unique karst formations. Like Menga, its orientation is an exception, as it is one of the few megalithic tombs in the region oriented towards the western half of the sky.
In contrast, the third tomb, the Viera Dolmen (c. 3510–3020 BCE), follows a more conventional astronomical plan. Located just 70 meters from Menga, its long corridor is oriented to face the sunrise during the spring and autumn equinoxes. This solar alignment, typical of many other European dolmens, emphasizes the deliberate and unusual choice made by the builders of Menga and El Romeral to connect their monuments to the mountains. The entire complex—the three tombs and the two natural monuments—shows a complex worldview that integrated both celestial events and the sacred power of the surrounding landscape.
