An invisible river
In the Kharga Oasis, about 40 kilometers north of Qaser Kharga, a vast Roman-era settlement called Umm el-Dabadib sits at the base of a 380-meter-high escarpment. To supply this remote outpost and its farms, engineers constructed a sophisticated water system. Rather than an arched aqueduct, they built a qanat, an ancient type of subterranean channel developed in Persia around the 1st millennium BCE. This technology relies on gravity to tap underground aquifers and transport water over long distances with minimal evaporation—important in a hyper-arid environment.
The system at Umm el-Dabadib consists of at least five main underground aqueducts running parallel to each other, with a combined length once estimated at over 30km. The longest single aqueduct is the westernmost one, stretching 4.6 kilometers. The builders excavated between 600 and 700 vertical shafts, spaced about 19 to 20 meters apart, to access the tunnel for construction and maintenance. Some of these shafts are over 53 meters deep, cut through solid sandstone bedrock. The main tunnels are about 1.5 meters high and 60 centimeters wide. In 1905, one cleared tunnel still had a flow rate of thirty-five gallons per minute. The entire project involved moving over 20,000 cubic meters of solid rock.
A desert lifeline
The qanat system supported a large Roman settlement that was strategically located where three major desert tracks converged. The site includes a large fortress, a town with multi-story houses, a temple, and a later Christian church. The water from the aqueducts irrigated extensive fields, allowing the cultivation of crops like acacia and date palms. This agricultural production was significant for the Roman Empire, which relied on its Egyptian provinces for grain and other high-value commodities.
While the Romans certainly expanded and used the system, the technology is Persian. Evidence suggests the qanats at Kharga may predate the Roman occupation, which began around 30 BCE. Similar systems have been found in the region that date to the 26th Dynasty or the Persian period that followed. The settlement appears to have been most active during the third and fourth centuries CE. It was abandoned toward the end of the fourth century, possibly due to a falling water table or the decline of Roman administrative control in the region. Today, the aqueducts remain largely intact, shows the advanced hydraulic engineering skills of their builders.
